Discover one of France's most beautiful regions, from wines to prehistorical caves, the highest concentration of "most beautiful French villages" and incredible local food
Lionel's picks
Dordogne represents some of, if not the best of what France has to offer. From incredible food to tasty wines and gorgeous villages, sceneries and history, it is a gem that I love and cannot wait for you to discover or rediscover.
You will find below a few of my favorite places. The best way to discover the region is by car and to book "chambre d'hôtes" where you will sleep in charming and authentic houses. If you want to make it even more special, try a Relai & Château for a truly extraordinary experience!
Brantôme, the Venice of Périgord
Brantome is an attractive town near the Northern edge of the département of Dordogne. It offers a nice mix of Medieval and Renaissance architecture to admire. In addition, the town is classed as one of 'les Plux Beaux Detours', most beautiful detours, in France, which is not an understatement.
Wine tasting in
Saint-Émilion will offer both the sightseeing and the wine tasting adventure. My personal recommendation is the must-see former convent Cloître des Cordeliers, where you can enjoy the locally produced (and delicious) Crémant de Bordeaux while enjoying the gorgeous scenery surrounding.
Le Gouffre de
Padirac
Le Gouffre de Padirac gives you the opportunity to get closer to the center of the Earth, more than 100 meters below ground. Within this cavern, you will enjoy both boat rides and walks alongside turquoise waters where you amongst other things will admire the extraordinary rock formations.
The famous Maison Hennessy of the Cognac region
The house of Hennessy offers you an exclusive experience on both sides of the river La Charente, where Richard Hennessy began to write history. This is truly an opportunity to discover the landscapes, skylines and the soul of the capital of Cognac.
Get lost in the medieval town of Sarlat
The most famous town in the region, and one of the most renowned and visited places in France. In my opinion, Sarlat is also one of the most beautiful cities in Périgord in large part thanks to its old town. The unique yellow stoned buildings date back to both Medieval and Renaissance times and create more than one instagrammable moment.
Domme, a fortified village in Dordogne
Domme is classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France and occupies a unique location high above the Dordogne river. The fortified village is not only lovely to visit, the view is as extraordinary as the cave system that sits right underneath the main square.
Les Grottes de Lascaux,
17 000 years of history
These caves are adorned by paintings that are 15-17000 years old, showcasing human art preceding any art piece found at le Louvre by thousands of years. The mystique of the place is as incredible as it is mindblowing, and I would definitely recommend a visit.
